Houston refiners show no signs of flooding

Reuters -- BAYTOWN, Texas (Reuters) - Eight of the 14 Texas oil refineries shut down before Hurricane Ike showed little visible sign of serious damage or flooding in the storm's wake on Saturday. In the Texas City area, the facilities included BP's 467,000 barrel per day refinery, Valero Energy's 200,000 bpd refinery and Marathon's 76,000 bpd Texas City plant. During a tour of the refineries, none of the Texas City plants had electricity for lighting and only BP and Valero had visible flares as darkness fell. There was no evidence of significant flooding and only shallow standing water at Marathon's facility. BP's refinery showed the only sign of wind damage. A warehouse had a damaged roof and part of a brick wall on the same building had collapsed.

This is the Oil companies showing us how intellegent they truely believe the American consumer to be. Sure We the few who do know what is actually going on cry shinanigans, but to the nation, all they know is a hurricane ripped through Texas near refineries and platforms. As the great Earl Pitts would say, "Wake Up America!"

you want someone to blame

blame the billionaire democrats that bought those hedges to screw with gas prices so they could get their candidates elected

namely warren buffet and his friends

they tried to influence the election and did it

And we the consumer will have to pay for the roof damage and collapsed wall, correct? It will be a while before we get any relief!

And haven't we been conditioned! If the price at the pump ever gets down to $3.00 we will think that cheap!!

TO: Plebe2001:

You stated "I am sure that some gas companies and gas stations took advantage of the situation and raised prices more then needed, but overall prices went up because of anticipated problems from yhe storm."

That's the definition of speculation!!!!!!

Results??? GREED

The problem we have in Tennessee is the pipelines are shutdown. Some stations in my area are out of gas and don't know when they'll get more. Only one has gone to 4.09, the other two are at 3.99 though one limiits purchases to 10 gallons.

it just falls as money gets pulled out

it was all speculation and this proves it

TO: FallieDog: No it doesn't. Investors whether stock or commodities are always looking forward and pricing for potential - whether good or bad.
I am sure that some gas companies and gas stations took advantage of the situation and raised prices more then needed, but overall prices went up because of anticipated problems from yhe storm. Fortunately there was minimal damage. BUT the refineries were shut done, reducing supplies of gasoline and increasing costs to the refineries.

What is the maximum price they are allowed to charge for gasoline? Do we need regulation? We need alternative fuels.

in maryland for the past several days in certain areas, gas stations have had pretty long lines with everyone filling up their suvs before 'the big one'. what i find funny is that the little bit that theyre getting isnt going to last them but a day or two given how far away they all live from civilization.

The damage to the refineries may be minor, but what about the workers' homes? Most of the workers had to evacuate and some lost their homes.
